Wood in a piano expands and contracts with moisture, and the soundboard crown that gives the instrument its tone depends on that wood staying stable.
Aim for 40 to 45 percent relative humidity in the piano room. A ten dollar hygrometer next to the instrument is the cheapest diagnostic tool you will ever buy.
Room humidifiers help but rarely reach the inside of the case. In-piano climate systems regulate the air immediately around the soundboard, which is where it matters.
Avoid placing a piano against an exterior wall, over a floor vent, or in direct afternoon sun through a south-facing window.
