What to inspect before you pay for someone else's piano problem.

Check the pinblock first. If tuning pins turn too easily or the piano will not hold a tuning through a single session, the repair bill can exceed the value of the instrument.
Look inside at the soundboard for cracks and, more importantly, for separated ribs. Hairline cracks alone are common and often harmless.
Press every key. Sluggish or uneven response is regulation work, which is affordable; broken shanks and flanges across many notes are not.
Free pianos are rarely free. Budget for moving, a pitch raise and at least one round of regulation before you commit.
